Position Summary:
The VP of Credit will lead the credit function with responsibility for underwriting and executing the most complex and high-risk transactions as well as strategic management of the credit portfolio, ensuring alignment with company goals and risk appetite. The ideal candidate will have a blend of technical credit expertise, portfolio management skills, and leadership ability to safeguard the company against credit losses.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the assignment and flow of credit inquiries and maintain efficient, high-quality credit application processing to balance business growth and risk mitigation.
- Monitor and manage the health of the entire credit portfolio, ensuring appropriate risk distribution across industries, client types, and deal structures. Identify trends, concentrations, and early warning signals to proactively manage portfolio risks.
- Own and lead the underwriting and approval of the most challenging and non-standard credit opportunities. Structure tailored financing solutions that align with client needs and company risk parameters.
- Produce detailed credit portfolio reports for executive leadership, highlighting key trends, sector exposures, and recommendations for portfolio adjustments. Provide actionable insights through ongoing data analysis.
- Work closely with internal teams including sales, documentation, funding, collections, and accounting to ensure seamless transaction execution and alignment of credit policies with business goals.
- Approve or decline credit proposals within the authority limits granted by executive leadership. Provide critical oversight on deal approvals submitted by Credit Analysts to ensure alignment with the company’s risk appetite.
- Mentor and develop the skills of Credit Analysts, creating a pipeline of talent for future leadership roles. Promote continuous learning and development within the team.
- Consult with business owners, executives, and financial stakeholders to identify financing solutions that align with both client needs and internal risk management strategies.
- Perform deep financial analyses of client companies, including developing cash flow models and conducting risk assessments. Offer insights on creditworthiness to support complex financing structures.
- Conduct comprehensive reviews of legal documentation both pre- and post-closing to ensure compliance with credit terms and protect the company’s interests.
- Provide training to Documentation Specialists and Service Specialists to improve cross-departmental competencies and transaction efficiency.
- Identify areas for improvement in systems and processes related to credit operations, collateral management, and reporting. Lead initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and accuracy.
Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or equivalent industry experience strongly preferred.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in credit management, with a focus on structured finance or equipment financing. Experience managing a portfolio of equipment finance transactions is essential.
- Expertise in a variety of industries within equipment finance, including construction, transportation, energy, real estate, aviation, and manufacturing.
- Proficiency in managing and analyzing portfolio-level risks, including the ability to spot trends and proactively manage concentrations and exposures.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop credit professionals at all levels, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team culture.
- Strong critical thinking skills to navigate complex problems, identify optimal solutions, and adapt to changing market conditions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to present complex insights to executive leadership and key stakeholders.
- Proven ability to evaluate the risks and benefits of potential actions and make strategic decisions aligned with company goals.
- Self-starter with the ability to take ownership of challenges, devise solutions, and deliver results under pressure.
- In-depth understanding of privacy laws and policies related to the protection of sensitive information and adherence to regulatory requirements.
